Certified Sex Addiction Therapy (CSAT)

About CSAT

What is sex and porn addiction treatment, exactly?

You just got done doing something that you promised yourself you’d never do again.  Even if you do manage to stop, the urges come back stronger than ever, and you give in again.  You’ve been through this pattern so many times already that you are close to giving up hope that you’ll ever be free.   Shame and despair keep you tight in their grip.  You look at others around you and think that no one is as bad or disgusting as you.  You want help but you’re beginning to believe that nothing can help you.

Jeremy of Mind and Heart Connections Therapy knows this battle and is qualified to help you become sober from the addictive behaviors and to get on the path to recovery.  As a Certified Sex Addictions Therapist (CSAT), Jeremy has been trained to assist as you develop a plan to get sober and to get on the path of recovery.

Sex & porn addiction isn’t really about sex

Struggling with compulsive sex behaviors or porn watching really isn’t about sex.  Sex & porn addiction is really about the inability to manage your nervous system.

Firemen putting out a fire with a firehose

Picture a firefighter putting out a fire.  Between the fire and the firefighter, which of those two best represents your compulsive or addictive behaviors?  You may be surprised by this, but the firefighter best represents your compulsive or addictive behaviors, while the fire represents your nervous system.   Something triggers your nervous system (the fire) and you need something to put out or cope with the fire.

Imagine this scenario: you are stressed out (the fire) with whatever you are facing in life, work, school, relationships, or anything else.  You need something to help calm or lessen the stressed-out sensation (the fire) in your nervous system.  You turn to the sexual behaviors or porn (the firefighter) to calm yourself by lessening the undesirable sensations.  The fire can be any emotion that creates negative energy in your nervous system, from excessive anxiety to depression, boredom, or loneliness.

Sobriety is the process of replacing the firefighter who is putting out the fire in destructive ways with a firefighter who can put out the fire in a way that does not violate your values or cause more destruction in your life.  Recovery is the process of getting down to the root of what is causing the fires in the first place.
